MISATO KATSURAGI
She is NERV's Operations Director and Shinji’s guardian. She is the sole survivor
of the Antarctica Expedition led by Dr. Katsuragi (Misato’s father) that discovered
the First Angel when the Second Impact occurred. The incident had left not only
a scar on her chest, but her life as well.
She did not say a word the first year after she was rescued, but later on, she
became an outgoing person. Apparently she had put the past behind her, yet she
indulged herself in different excesses, especially beer. Joining NERV is also
part of that list. When Kaji returned, it became clear the all these indulgences
merely served as tranquilizers to her pain. The return of Kaji simply resurfaced
what she was desperately trying to forget.
She broke up with Kaji when they were in college because he reminded her of
her father, yet she was attracted to Kaji because he was like her father. She
despised her father for very much the same reason Shinji despised his. In Kaji,
she found the warmth that her father never gave. When she found her father's
shadow in Kaji, she ran away, even though it was a very happy and comfortable
feeling. That was the internal conflict that Misato could not reconcile.
